About SKI BUM
SKI BUM is a guide to every ski area in the United States, state by state, from the biggest destination resorts to the rope tow in the next county over.
History
The site's news archive goes back to January 2004, when Rick Bolger was publishing ski news at a site called SkierNet.com. SkierNet was later sold and relaunched as Gondyline.com, and for one season the work ran under the name SkiBumUSA.com.
In October 2016 it moved here. Rick had wanted the name for years, after a book he read as a teenager, and found that Skibum.net had been abandoned. His first post at this address called it "the new home of the old school."
From then until March 2025, Rick and a small group of contributors, including Sam Shirley, Bill O'Hara, Liz Holste and Bob Sisco, wrote 356 of the news posts you can still read here, along with the state guides and the gear and how-to pages. You can read more about them on the team page.
In 2026 the site changed hands, and it is being rebuilt. The old pages are back at their original addresses, restored from the Internet Archive, with their original dates and bylines. Older writing is marked as coming from the archive and has not been updated.

Data sources
Ski area numbers come from these sources. Each resort page lists the source behind each of its figures. Not every figure has been checked by a person yet, so check with the ski area before you plan around one.
- Resort websites: each ski area's own published statistics, trail maps and snow reports.
- Indy Pass: resort statistics from the Indy Pass resort pages. Pass membership also comes from the official Epic, Ikon and Mountain Collective resort lists.
- Wikipedia: ski area articles and comparison tables, used under CC BY-SA. Wikidata also supplies some website addresses and locations.
- © OpenStreetMap contributors / OpenSkiMap, ODbL: locations and operating status for some smaller ski areas. Data from OpenSkiMap, based on OpenStreetMap, under the Open Database License.
- USGS Geographic Names Information System: locations for some ski areas.
- The old SKI BUM guides: where nothing newer exists, the figures published on this site in earlier years, recovered from the Internet Archive.
